About Us!

Welcome to Basil & Baylys Permaculture, Farm Garden!

  • We are a family run, small scale farm garden based in Owaka in the beautiful Catlins, we are organic, no dig growers of high quality plants and produce.
  • Our team consists of Wendy the tomato connoisseur, Alex the chief builder, Carla the brains of the operation and Monica our chief technical advisor.
  • Located on the edge of the Owaka township, we have cared for our small 4ha block plus the neighbouring farm for over 15 years, running sheep and beef learning how to actively build and support our soils. When the family decided to sell the  larger block, Carla sold up in the city and moved back to Owaka to pursue the sustainability dream and thats where Basil & Baylys was born.
  • For over 10 years we have been growing heritage/heirloom tomatoes in our old calf tunnel, loving the amazing variety and flavours compared to the bog standard round and reds you get in the shops, we grow all of our own plants and with our love of plants and propagation began to grow more and more seedlings for our friends and now the wider community, focusing on heritage, open pollinated varieties.
  • We have now moved up to a 42m polytunnel with our first growing season this year (2022) we hope to be able to continue to provide our local community with more and more well grown plants and healthy tasty produce.
  • We were also lucky enough to purchase the old Owaka Baptist Church, (now called the Basil & Baylys Farm Shop and Hall) last year, it is an amazing old building that we hope to put to good use.
  • There is currently a 24/7 honesty stall out the front, selling our plants and produce, the hall is also available to hire for meetings, workshops, talks and classes.
  • We host a Makers & Growers Market at Waitangi weekend and a Spring Plant Market at Labour weekend every year.
