Willow

Willow at Basil & Baylys

Willow is such a versatile, useful and beautiful plant to grow. We began growing our patch in 2023 because it fits beautifully within our permaculture principles.

From it we make baskets, garden structures and ornaments (both practical and beautiful!) to create shelter and living fences, archways and huts.

We use it to make biochar and charcoal sticks as kindling and as mulch and compost - it also provides food and habitat for local birds and insects as well as being so lovely to look at! Especially in a breeze as moves like a giant kinetic sculpture.

Using willow is an ancient craft and although we are only at the beginning of our journey with it, being able to share what we’ve learned and are still learning with others and being able to help make the craft available to more and more people is very heartening and enjoyable!
