Manaia Maize Seed
Manaia Maize Seed
Zea mays
40 x seeds
NZ heritage maize from the Coromandel.
Tall growing corn/maize for fermenting, drying and grinding, it stood up very well in our strong winds and is a beautiful, solid rich gold colour. 2 cobs per plant, cobs up to 30cm long.
Our seed stock sourced through Koanga Gardens who say this about it:
Dry. This is the old yellow maize remembered by many especially older Maori who often ate it fermented. This corn was kept alive by Koro on the Coromandel. It is the only New Zealand heirloom pure yellow maize I know of, and over the years we have had many requests for it. Thanks Koro! - Koanga Gardens
Planting Instructions:
Sow seeds into a tray of seed raising media, arrange so each seed has a good amount off space around it. Lay kernel on its side, root and shoot emerge from base of the kernel. A warm place or bottom heat will speed germination.
Plant out after the threat of frost has passed, they can take a lite frost but it will set back their growth.
If need be you can transplant into pots to grow on before planting out, their root growth is very quick and can’t stay in their tray too long
Plant at about 40cm cross spacing, they are wind pollinated so planting in blocks rather than skinny rows will help achieve good pollination.
