Willow is a most fabulous product - fast growing, it produces tons of material that can be used for a myriad of things; making baskets, weaving garden edging or barriers, making obelisks and plant supports, archways and fences - living structures, gates, furniture, it makes excellent biochar and in drought it can also be cut and used as animal fodder. Growing willow also provides habitat and food for birds, bees, butterflies and other critters.
The willows listed here are some of the best willows available in NZ for basketry specifically
-
Salix viminalis ‘Gigantea’ - grows fast and big! Up to 10ft in one year (1.8 - 3 metres), best for chunky basket work, fencing, edging and living structures. It dries to a dark red/brown.
- Salix purpurea ‘Nana’ - A finer willow, that grows slender long rods, perfect for small or delicate basketry. It grows 2 - 5 feet (0.6 - 1.5 metres). When fresh it is a purple-red, and dries to a medium brown.
- Salix purpurea ‘Green Dicks’ - Probably the best all round basket willow, at least in our growing conditions. Grows 5 - 7 feet (1.5 - 2.1 metres) and tends to be a bit thinner than Black Maul. When fresh it is a vibrant green that dries down to a light brown or orange depending on how much light it has been exposed to.
- Salix triandra ‘Black Maul’ - A great all-round basket willow. It grows 5 - 8 feet (1.5 - 2.4 metres). Tends to be a bit thicker than our other major basket willow, green dicks. A lovely deep brown colour fresh, that settles into a a slightly lighter brown. This variety is also commonly used for white willow (aka de-barked willow), though we have not tried to do this ourselves…yet.
We are building up our stock of brighter coloured varieties and will not be offering them this year, but hopefully by the 2027 season.
